Herdade da Barrosinha

1st Prize in Architectural Competition

future

Two architectural firms and a team of landscape designers joined forces to create a strategic partnership focused on the development of the Barrosinha Agricultural Company in Alentejo. We joined the team, providing support and consultancy for the strategic development of visual presentation wich needed to be compelling enough to convince the jury and an authentic representation of the architects and developers visions.

Against the backdrop of a deep blue sky and the warm embrace of the sun, a contemporary building emerges with discreet elegance. Built in terracotta color tones, this architecture speaks to the ancient spirit of the landscape.

The Barrosinha Agricultural Company project is a visionary endeavor encompassing approximately 2,000 hectares. The master plan proposes dividing the estate into nine Operational Management Units (UOPG), arranged in concentric rings and designed to integrate tourism, housing, commerce, and leisure. More than a construction project, it embodies an ethos of coexistence, guided by the principle of "building without devastating." Its ambition is to redefine the vast landscape of Herdade da Barrosinha, creating a renewed identity that harmonizes with the local agro-forestry heritage. With a forward-thinking approach, this urban initiative seeks to establish a meaningful impact not only locally but also on a national scale, positioning Barrosinha as a cultural hub and a benchmark for sustainable development and innovation.

At the heart of this project lies a profound commitment to nature, expressed through a meticulous study that balances human presence with unwavering respect for the environment. The land analysis combined careful technical urban planning assessments—essential for a project of this scale and typology—with an emotional evaluation of the place’s intrinsic memory. This deep understanding of the generational bond between humans and the landscape has informed a strategic approach to preserving the essence of the site while identifying areas for thoughtful intervention. The resulting architecture is characterized by its specificity, adaptability, and resilience, ensuring that each element serves as a harmonious synthesis of the past, present, and future.
